Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed martial arts is a full-contact combat sport taking the best elements from striking wrestling and Jiujitsu.

The term MMA became popular in 1993 when the Gracie family looked to test their family’s style of street fighting against all other martial arts by creating the Ultimate Fighting Championships.

MMA classes run with striking practice, situational sparring, takedown variations and a BJJ element. During training, techniques are practised with controlled MMA sparring wearing the MMA gloves and shin pads and students are respectful of one another.

Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ)

Jiu-jitsu comes from the Japanese word gentle art.

Brazilian Jiujitsu is a ground-based martial art, where leverage and technique is used to control and submit an opponent, unlike other arts where striking is applied.

The art was developed when Mitsuyo Maeda taught Japanese Jiujitsu and judo to a group of Brazilian pioneers Carlos and Helio Gracie and Luiz França with both of them developing the art evolving the techniques and going on to become the founders of today what is known as Brazilian Jiujitsu.

Classes in Brazilian Jiujitsu are led by head instructor Jon Dale who is a 2-stripe brown belt under Team Lagarto and has studied Jiujitsu for over 20 years.

Classes are structured to cover drills, techniques and sparring all done in a Gi (judo suit).

MMA Striking

MMA Striking is best performed when combining a variety of skills from as many arts as possible.

In our striking program, we used the best techniques from boxing, Thai boxing and kickboxing to give the best strategy for the student whilst maintaining awareness of takedowns to allow for the grappling attacks.

MMAFIT

Functional strength and conditioning are important in all sports allowing the body to move, twist bend and explode at the correct times and to maximise the performance of the athlete.

Our MMA FIT program is designed to train the athlete to develop in all aspects of MMA functionality.
